When you go for an eye exam an eye doctor can spot diseases such as high cholesterol, high blood pressure, diabetes, liver disease, brain tumors, macular degeneration, glaucoma, and cataracts!

The brain is the most vital organ when it comes to healthy eye function. Our brain allows us to live complex lives and hosts the optic nerves that connect your eyes and your brain. Therefore, if you maintain healthy eyes than you can similarly maintain healthy brain function as well.

Eye health is often taken for granted, and most times unknowingly. It may come as a shock to many that there are tips and methods that you can implement into your daily life to maintain healthy vision and eyes. 1.) Eat Well

Eating well is a universal tip to overall health, and this healthy eating practice will also contribute to healthy eyes. Nutrients that you eat such as omega-3 fatty acids, lutein, zinc, and vitamin C might help in the long run to fight off vision problems like cataracts and macular degeneration. When it comes time to eating be sure that you have a healthy dose of green leafy vegetable, fish like salmon and tuna, protein from eggs, nuts, and beans, oranges and other citrus fruits high in Vitamin C, and oysters and pork.

When you maintain a well-balanced diet with all food groups, you can be sure that your body and your eyes appreciates it just as much!

2.) Wear Sunglasses

As you walk outside your eyes are introduced to a number of things like sun and UV rays. The UV rays can potentially be damaging to the eyes and it is something that you will want to shield your eyes from with direct exposure. Try finding the right pair of sunglasses that will help protect your eyes from UV rays to prevent macular degeneration and cataracts.

3.) Limit Computer Screen Time

If you live and work on your computer on a daily basis than you may be all too familiar with the damaging effects of the blue light on your eyes. I, myself work daily on a computer and have seen the progression that the computer light has had on my eyes. Generally, staring at a computer screen can cause eyestrains, blurry vision, dry eyes, headaches, and neck and back pain. If you start to experience any of these signs it is best to step away from the computer and limit the time you spend daily with your eyes on the screen.

4.) Quit Smoking

Did you know that smoking makes you more at risk of getting cataracts, damaging your optic nerve, and/or progression of macular degeneration? Smoking can have serious, long-lasting effects on your eyes and therefore it is important to try to quit smoking ASAP to help regain healthier eyes and fight against potential eye conditions down the road.

5.) Under-go Routine Eye Examines

Everyone needs to have their eyes check each year, as a preventive measure to fight against any progressing eye issues. As we discussed earlier, eye exams can help detect numerous health conditions early to help combat these illnesses quickly and effectively. Be sure that you stay consistent and are regular about getting your eyes check each and every year to promote and maintain eye health.
